Cancellations:

SVMIC is also a sponsor of this event. State Volunteer Mutual Insurance Company will co-host a session from 8:00 – 10:00 a.m. Physicians who attend this session will be eligible to receive a 10% premium discount. Physicians must register separately by contacting SVMIC, 615-377-1999, or by visiting the SVMIC website. SVMIC charges a $50 registration fee that is separate from and in addition to the TSA Conference registration fee. Attendance at the entire TSA program is not necessary for SVMIC policy holders to be eligible for the 10% premium.

Faculty Disclosure Statement — It is the policy of Vanderbilt School of Medicine to require disclosure of financial relationships from individuals in a position to control the content of a CME activity; to identify and resolve conflicts of interest related to those relationships; and to make disclosure information available to the audience prior to the CME activity. Presenters are required to disclose discussions of unlabeled/unapproved uses of drugs or devices during their presentations.

Accreditation — This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the Essential Areas and Policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) through the joint sponsorship of Vanderbilt School of Medicine and the Tennessee Society of Anesthesiologists. Vanderbilt School of Medicine is accredited by the ACCME to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

Designation of Credit — Vanderbilt School of Medicine designates this educational activity for a maximum of 6 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s)^TM. Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

Learning Objectives — At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to describe and discuss:

How anesthesia information management systems are a key infrastructure to bring anesthesiology to a new level of safety and effectiveness, even though they require significant investment of time to benefit to practices and patients
How to alter physician practices to align their incentives with their hospitals, creating more effective and dynamic partnerships
How to achieve and develop a self-awareness of place in an ethical tradition Strategies to impact the implementation process for the new national health reform law.
How to collect outcomes and use them to create national as well as local benchmarks for care
How to recognize likely etiologies associated with perioperative position injuries and how to reduce the risk of them occurring

Statement of Educational Need —

Because there are no national standards determining how anesthesia information management systems can and should be used, anesthesiologists must be trained to lead their institutions to use electronic medical records to provide the highest levels of patient safety and effectiveness. Making the Surgical Care Improvement Project measures a critical source for coordinating incentives for anesthesiologists and hospitals. Anesthesiologists do not understand the scope of the quality management tools utilized by the new Anesthesia Quality Institute. The impact of moral and ethical behavior needs to beomce a greater focus of anesthesiology programs. In addition, like most citizens, anesthesiologists do not understand the full impact of the new health reform legislation and its implementation

on patient care and patient safety. New research indicates that current anesthesia practices do not take the impact on peripheral nerves into proper consideration.
