Statement of Educational Need — The following educational needs have been established:

  • Anesthesiologists do not know the most current innovations in obstetric anesthesia.

  • No defined “best practice” has been established nationally regarding practices to avoid opioid addiction

  • National studies indicate that anesthesiologists and the hospitals they serve do not fully understand the federal requirements for implementing the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act .

  • Changes in federal regulations and guidelines have changed what is allowed in hospital service agreements.

  • Anesthesiologists do not understand the scope of the quality management tools utilized by the Anesthesia Quality Institute and how it can help their practice meet the new federal standards.

  • The changing political and legal milieu complicates anesthesiologists understanding of the impact of the Patient Care and Affordable Care Act in providing patient care while facing reduced funding for that care.

Learning Objectives - At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Describe innovations in obstetric anesthesia and understand how to implement them.
  • Discuss the two main standards for use of opioids and determine how to avoid opioid addiction in patients.
  • Develop a strategy to choose the software necessary to meet the federal requirements for anesthesia electronic medical records.
  • List the most important legal difficulties to avoid in hospital service agreements.
  • Outline strategies to collect outcomes and use them to create national as well as local benchmarks for care.
  • Describe the Patient Care and Affordable Care Act standards for patient care by anesthesiologists and the actions that can be taken to provide the best patient care without suffering financial penalties.

Accreditation and Credit Designation Statements

  • This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the Essential Areas and policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education through the joint sponsorship of the American Society of Anesthesiologists and the Tennessee Society of Anesthesiologists.
